Wow - a day off and a sleep in. What a novelty.
But what a strange day. First of all - for the first few hours Tom and I were fighting each other for access to the bathroom! We love spicy food but a surfeit of it in a short space of time has given us a battering. And if that is too much information you really didn't want to be at this end of it!
Then we were picked up by a couple of lovely young ladies, Harsimran and Gurkiran and Suman's son Sahil, who were taking us out for the day. First of all we went to the lake and had a walk round there. Under orders I took my first selfie which was not a great success and would be immediately deleted. From there they took us to a Sikh temple which was a fascinating experience. First of all, shoes off, wash hands then put on a bandana. I have to say this was the first holy place I've been too and seen a bloke standing there with a great big spear. Harsimran and Gurkiran took us through the whole process and explained all the different steps.
From there we went to see Punjab University Campus, one of the top universities in India. This is the university Harsimran and Gurkiran go to. Interesting to see monkeys living wild in the trees, coming down the trunks and teasing the stray dogs …
And then it was onto Sector 17. This isn't as alien as it sounds - nothing like the District 9 of the film or Area 51 in the USA. It's a massive shopping area. They took us for ice-creams to a small booth that has been there for donkey's years but which boasted a security guard!
We also experienced our first taste of Indian road rage which became a feminist issue! Don't ask!
From there back to the hotel where we were picked up by Suman and taken to a country club - 3500 acres, bigger than Chandigarh and owned by one guy. We were given a tour and wined and dined - VX India hoping to host a World Cup here. This would be absolutely fantastic.
Fantastic day off - what a treat and what a novelty. I very much hope to be able to repay the hostpitality at some point.
