So says Helen Mackenzie, Director of Sport for Ripon Schools, and she should know - Ripon Grammar School where Helen works is the National Centre of vXcellence and was the focus of a three-page article in the AfPE Journal Physical Education Matters. The school has used VX not only in PE but in other areas of the curriculum - art, music, English, house competition ...
Helen runs Primary PE festivals. She might get 3 teams, 8 teams, 5 teams. When it's a VX festival she gets over 20 teams from the primary schools. One year one rural primary sent EIGHT teams. Why? Simple:
VX is a mixed sport so boys and girls can both participate on an equal footing
VX is incredibly inclusive
VX gets non-sporty children involved
With several balls in play the focus isn't on any specific individual so less-sporty children don't feel under so much pressure and can quickly enjoy a degree of success
the four cornerstones of the sport are honesty, integrity, sportsmanship and respect
the chidren have to work really hard - but don't realise it
it's FUN!
VX is a 'no-blame game'
it's popular with the children
